We Are (Teacup)
We Are (Teacup)

2016, dimensions variable, Ice, tea, teacup

We are (Teacup) is an investigation in the dissolving of an impermanent structure over time. The structural support (a shelf made of ice) for the domestic/heirloom item (the teacup) will eventually melt, causing the teacup to capsize and fall to the ground, and potentially break. This work is rooted in the idea of changing perceptions of another person or a place, where what is thought to be true changes, dissolves, or erodes over time. The cup may break or it may not, but either way the previous structure will no longer exist and will need to be reconsidered and replaced. The time in which it takes for this process to happen is slow, and impossible to discern at a glance, further speaking to the insecurity and instability of the changes in certain relationships and perceptions.

Weight/Relief
Weight/Relief

2016, Installation view, dimensions variable- approximately 68" high, Ice and handmade rope

Weight/Relief investigates the easing of tension between two entities over time. The ice acts as both a weight and a binding agent for the two ropes, which are partially entwined within the ice but not permanently connected to each other. As the rings of ice melt, the tension on the ropes is lessened and eventually they will naturally fall apart. The tension created by the ice is both a physical reality and a metaphorical gesture towards emotions that serve both to bind together as well as weigh down certain relationships. As this tension dissolves, there is not only a release of the weight, but also the loss of a connection.
